The two ways a downed tree still bites
Tension and compression. A trunk lying over a fence, a stump, or a dip in the ground is loaded like a bow, and a cut in the wrong spot releases it violently, pinching the saw at best and throwing the trunk at worst. Root plates are the other one: a tipped tree with roots half out of the ground can stand back up when the trunk weight is cut away, taking whatever is nearby with it. Both are routine to handle correctly and genuinely dangerous to freelance.
What cleanup includes
The whole tree leaves: trunk bucked and hauled or cut to firewood lengths if you want to keep it, limbs chipped, the fence line or lawn beneath cleared of debris, and the root plate cut down and stump ground if you choose.
